DNA TESTING WHILE PREGNANT

pregnancy paternity test before birth

What is a paternity DNA test?

A paternity test is a relationship test that determines the probability of paternity between a man and child.

Prenatal paternity testing can be used to establish the paternity of a child legally if a judge issues a court order.

Can I perform a Paternity Test while being pregnant?

Yes, it is possible to perform a paternity test during pregnancy. You have three options, depending on how far along you are and your preferences:

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS):

  • Performed by your OBGYN during weeks 12-14 of pregnancy.
  • Requires coordination with your OBGYN for proper sample handling and shipping.
  • While generally successful, it carries some risks to the fetus.

Amniocentesis

Also performed by your OBGYN.

  • Requires coordination for proper sample handling and shipping.
  • Carries some risks to the fetus.
  • Note: OBGYN’s typically perform this procedure only for health-related concerns, not solely for paternity testing.

We recommend you consult your OBGYN about the risks associated with each procedure.

Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing:

  • Requires no OBGYN permission.
  • Involves a blood test from the mother and a buccal swab from the potential father.
  • Can be performed as early as the 12th week of pregnancy.
  • Less risky than CVS or amniocentesis, but accuracy has been questioned by some geneticists.
  • Results are for informational purposes only and cannot be used for legal proceedings.
  • More expensive than the other options.
  • Only two DNA labs in the U.S. currently offer this service.

DNA Paternity Tests NJ does not currently offer non-invasive prenatal paternity testing. We can assist with amniocentesis and CVS DNA paternity testing if necessary.

However, we recommend waiting until after birth to perform the DNA paternity test, as this option has the least risk and highest accuracy.

After birth paternity tests use cheek swab sample collections which is painless, non-invasive and is not a health risk to the child.

Can your OBGYN do a DNA test while pregnant?

Yes. It is possible for an OBGYN to participate performing a DNA sample collection for invasive sample collection for CVS or amniocentesis.

Outside of assisting a DNA testing company like DNA Paternity Test Center NJ, OBGYN’s do not offer stand alone DNA testing services.

Results Turnaround Time

The turnaround time for an invasive prenatal paternity test is 2 to 3 business days from the date the lab receives all genetic samples.

How much is a prenatal Paternity Test?

The cost of our invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing cost starts $800.00 and up. Please note this prenatal testing option requires the mother’s OBGYN to participate in the DNA sample collection process.

How accurate is prenatal Paternity Testing?

Prenatal Paternity Testing is an accurate DNA testing option with a 99.9% and higher for inclusion (proving paternity). Remember, the efficiency of this testing option will be determined by how effectively your OBGYN collects samples.
