Can I perform a DNA Paternity Test while being pregnant?

Yes. It is possible to perform a Paternity test while being pregnant but, you will few options at your disposal depending on how far along you are and preference.

There are 3 different options a mother’s has in order to perform a paternity test.

1. CVS – This particular option must be conducted by your obgyn. We must communicate with you OBGYN on how the sample must handled and ship in order for this specific procedure to not compromise the sample. A Chrionic Villus Sampling (CVS)can be performed by your OBGYN during weeks 12-14.

This procedure although it has been performed many of times successfully of the years. It does come with a risk that may affect the fetus. We recommend consulting with your OBGYN about the risks of this procedure.

2. Amniocentesis – This particular option must also be conducted by your obgyn. We must communicate with you OBGYN on how the sample must handled and ship to the lab in order for this specific procedure to not compromise the sample.

Although, this procedure has been performed many of times successfully over the years. It does come with a some risk that may affect the fetus. We recommend consulting with your OBGYN about the risks of this procedure. Please note, OBGYN’s tend not to perform this type of procedure unless there is a health issue that may affect the child. What is basically means is, an Amniocentisis in most cases will not be performed by an OBGYN for paternity testing purposes only

3. Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing

This prenatal paternity test option requires no OBGYN permission. This is a blood test and buccal swab DNA test. This test can be performed by some companies as early as the 12th week. It does not have the same risks as the previous two options but, the accuracy of this DNA test has been questioned by some Geneticists. This particular option is fairly new to the market in comparison to Amniocentesis and CVS. Only two DNA labs currently offer Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing service in the U.S.

It is important to note that this type of DNA test can not be use as a legal document or for any court proceeding. Therefore this DNA test is for informational purposes only. This option is also more expensive than the previous two options mentioned earlier.

Currently, DNA Paternity Tests NJ currently does not offer non-invasive prenatal paternity testing services. We can, however, assist with Amniocentesis and CVS DNA Paternity testing process if necessary. Although, we recommend allowing the mother to give birth and perform the DNA Paternity Test because this option has the least amount of risk and the highest accuracy.
